Eastern European Journalists

VISITING FELLOWSHIPS FOR JOURNALISTS FROM EASTERN EUROPE

Since 1995 the Wincott Foundation has been organising a programme which enables journalists from Eastern Europe to visit the UK for three months of study. The programme, which is partly financed by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, is run in cooperation with the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and Green College at Oxford University.

The Wincott fellows spend one term in Oxford, and they are based at the Institute for the Study of Journalism offices, where they link up with a range of journalists - from other parts of the world on the Institute’s Journalism Fellowship Programme. The Wincott fellows attend regular seminars each week and occasional special lectures relating to journalism, and they are encouraged to go to other events at Oxford University.

In addition, they undertake a study project on a topic of their choice, leading to the completion of a 5-8000 word paper at the end of their stay; each fellow is assigned an academic advisor, usually an Oxford academic specialising in the Wincott Fellow’s chosen area, for the purpose of this project.

During their stay in the UK arrangements are made for the fellows to visit the Financial Times and to other media organisations such as Thomson Reuters or the BBC.

The aim of the programme is to contribute to the development of business and economic journalism in the countries concerned.

The programme normally involves two journalists each year. The selection takes place in the period from November to December, with the journalists taking up residence in Oxford in October, January or April.
