THE 2016 HAROLD WINCOTT MEMORIAL LECTURE

"Britain and Europe: What Ways Forward?"

The 2016 Harold Wincott Annual Memorial Lecture, entitled "Britain and Europe: What Ways Forward?", was given on Wednesday, 26 October 2016 by Harold James, Professor of History and International Affairs at Princeton University.

"Brexit was born out of a twin crisis, of globalization and of the euro. The precipitant of the structural break was the drama produced by the so-called euro crisis, that set an intellectual divide alongside the physical one of the English Channel."

Professor James's lecture was followed by a response from Robert Tombs, Professor of Modern European History at the University of Cambridge.

"What is undeniable is the increasing failure of the Europeanist vision of history to convince, not only in Britain but all across Europe"
