Press and Online Awards

HAROLD WINCOTT PRESS AWARDS FOR 2011

Nominations are invited by mid-February 2012 for the four awards the Foundation will be making for work that has made a distinctive contribution to public awareness and understanding of economic, financial and business life. These are:

1.       Senior Financial Journalist of the Year £2,000

This award is open to any journalist writing on economic, financial and business affairs. The Press Panel will consider entries from regular columnists or commentators who may not be on the full-time staff of the journal concerned.

2.       Young Financial Journalist of the Year £1,000

Candidates must have been under the age of 28 on 31st December 2011;

3.       Personal Financial Journalist of the Year £1,500

4.       Online Journalism (blog or website) £1,500

CRITERIA

Awards 1-3
The criteria for the three individual press awards are not cut and dried. The judges are looking for the ability to analyse and interpret, controversially if necessary, as well as to report. All nominations will be considered. In an attempt to make the task for the judges more manageable, editors are asked to submit no more than three names in any one category. It would also be helpful if views were summarised of nominees’ strengths and achievements.

The Trustees are particularly keen to encourage younger financial journalists, several of whom have proceeded to the senior award. The panel was delighted with the quality of entries for 2010.

The panel will be considering nominations early in March, and entries should be sent to the Secretary at the address below no later than 29 February, 2012, either by post in paper form or by email (which will be acknowledged), preferably in MS Word or PDF format.

Nominations should be accompanied by up to half a dozen representative examples of the work of the journalist concerned published in 2011. The aim is to keep the procedure simple; there are no formal application forms and a covering letter is all that is required.

Award 4

The field of online business journalism continues to evolve rapidly. Nominations in this category will be judged by their skill in dealing online with business subjects in a way which meets the core objectives of the Wincott Foundation, ie, their work contributes to a wider understanding of economic, financial and business life. In judging entries, the panel will be assessing how these virtues are achieved through making full use of technology, including interactive features, blogging, social media and web-based publishing, either through individual interventions or possibly in sustained engagement or campaigning on a theme. On-line entries may include video and audio elements, along with text.

Nominations should be sent to the Secretary at the address below by 29 February, 2012, either by post or by email (which will be acknowledged). Entries should be accompanied by five examples of the nominated online work published during 2011. Entries can be in the form of documents (eg pdf) or clearly delineated links to relevant items.
