The Wincott Foundation was established in 1969 in honour of the financial journalist Harold Wincott. His work was distinguished by its dealing with problems of practical importance and dealing with them with great clarity and lucidity. The aim of Wincott Foundation Research grants is to encourage such work.
Projects should be in applied economics, and preferably in the areas of finance and economic policy. They should be, in Alfred Marshall’s words, concerned with “the study of mankind in the ordinary business of life”. They should also strive to be as clearly and accessibly written as is consistent with rigorous treatment of the material. This should include clear diagrammatic or verbal explanation of statistical work; it certainly does not preclude the use of statistical analysis.
Applications should be made to Ian Rodger, Secretary of the Wincott Foundation, 115 Ashley Gardens, Thirleby Road, London SW1P 1HJ.
